Our skilled masons can repair your brickwork by providing repointing and tuckpointing services: Repointing is the process of removing old mortar from the joints and replacing it with fresh mortar.
Tuckpointing is the process of removing old mortar from the joints, and replacing it with mortar that closely matches the color of the bricks. Then narrow lines of putty in a contrasting color (“fillets”) are embedded down the center of the new mortar joint. The terms “tuckpointing” and “repointing” are often used synonymously; however, the final products are aesthetically quite different. Both processes involve removing and replacing old and deteriorating mortar with fresh mortar; however, repointing does not involve the additional step of applying the contrasting lines in the centers of the joints. Some homeowners choose tuckpointing because it will create a crisp visual illusion because the mortar matches the color of the bricks. Unless you examine the wall closely, you will not notice where the mortar ends and the brick begins. The fillets fool the eye into thinking the straight lines are the actual mortar joints. This makes the entire wall look like it was constructed with crisp new masonry. Call Masonry New Orleans today for brick repair services!
Brick Masonry
There are several types of masonry that use bricks, stone, and/or concrete masonry. Each type has its own methods, appearance, and style of construction. Brick masonry is a durable form of construction often used in the construction of walls and structures. Bricks are secured in place with mortar in a neat and orderly fashion, creating solid mass that can easily support loads. Brick masonry has been used for centuries. Stones and/or bricks secured with mortar are created to withstand more weight and last through various weather conditions. There are several types of stones/bricks and mortars available to contractors today. Selecting and choosing the type of stone or brick and mortar should be based on the climate of your local area and the structures in the local area. The appearance of the masonry can vary in size and color and can be designed to meet your desires. Several different types of bond styles are available when installing brick. Some are necessary due to the building application you envision, but others may be used to create a certain aesthetic. Common bonds are stretcher bonds, English bonds, header bonds, Flemish bonds, Dutch bonds, stack bonds, American bonds, and facing bonds. Often stretcher bonds are used for constructing walls and the bases of structures. Masons often refer to these bonds use the terms “stretcher” and “header”. A header refers to the short end of the brick, while stretchers are the longer side. Some styles have the header showing, and some styles will have the stretcher facing out. Some use a combination to make a beautiful pattern with the bricks. The experienced masons at Masonry New Orleans can help you choose what will look the best for your project. The masonry tools, mortar and bricks, that are used for these projects can be found at almost every home improvement store. However, the year of experience cannot! There are many different styles and types of masonry construction. An experienced mason can help you choose the types that are best for you, and will have the experience necessary to make sure the mortar is properly and expertly prepared and applied. Other tools that the masons use are a tape measure, hose, hammer, level, trowel, and a jointer. These tools ensure that the masonry job is done properly and creates a clean and beautiful finish. Goggles and a wheelbarrow may also be used to provide personal safety and to make the job easier. Our experienced masons have all of these tools, and more importantly the years of experience, to make sure the job is done right.
